User Reviews:

   Summary: Well done
You really cannot ask for two better actors than Linney and Hoffman. Even if you think the content is not for you, these two are always wonderful to watch. A sad story, but very real-to-life, The Savages is a great study in family dynamics, growing older and growing more responsible whether you like it or are ready for it or not. Time to step up.

 Rating 2   Written on June 19, 2008
   Summary: Savagely Depressing
This is not a bad film if you look at it as a piece of film making. The acting is not bad, the directing is not bad and the over all film is not bad. It is also about an important subject. BUT... it is do depressing that I can't think of any reason that I would want to watch it again and if I would have know how depressing it was I wouldn't have watched it in the first place.

Depressing.

Summary: A realistic slice of life told with dark humor
I have read the other reviews that tell the story and speak of the actors great portrayals. All true. Great story. Great acting. But what makes The Savages so special is its realism about dementia/alzheimers and how the family copes. Unlike the films The Notebook or Away From Her that sugar coat dealing with dementia and make it appear mellow and rosy, it is not. Writer/director Tamara Jenkins hits the nail on the head. It is messy, literally and figuratively.

As someone who's been a caregiver for a mother-in-law with alzheimers for about 7 yrs and counting, I finally feel supported. It's horrible. Watching the patient become less themselves, start to do bizarre and embarrasing acts, become agressive. Families fighting over how to care for the patient and anguished in the process. Guilt, horror, sadness, loss and this is all while the loved one is still alive. I call patients with dementia/alzheimers the living dead. Brava for showing this disease in all its thorny, unpredictable truth!

Half the population will have dementia/alzheimers by age 85. We need to fight for a cure, before its you or your loved one.

   Summary: Savages
For those viewers who have never lived in Manhattan, Savages is an inside view of four adults whose lives have taken isolated paths in unusual but interesting directions. The performances are top rate and the story is mentally sharp while being entertaining and informative. Dealing with dementia while certainly topical, is merely the underlying theme. The characters' lives, are the real interest. The depth and details were often unexpected. They always continued to acquaint you with yet another facet of existence that otherwise would probably remain unknown. The heaviness of the subject matter is all that kept me from rating it higher.

   Summary: Another Dysfunctional Family Drama
"Savages," (2007), a comedy/drama from the first-time writer/director Tamara Jenkins, comes to us as another examination of a contemporary dysfunctional family. It stars Laura Linney, deservedly nominated for an Oscar in her role as the annoying Wendy Savage; Philip Seymour Hoffman as her underachieving brother Jon, and Philip Bosco as their aging, going into dementia dad Lenny, who abused them when he had the chance. Life hasn't treated this brother and sister as they would wish - they're a long way from achieving their dreams - and suddenly they find they must put their preoccupations aside to look after their father. The acting, individual and ensemble, is excellent: first timer Jenkins has done very well with her excellent cast. Mise en scene, Sun City Arizona, and dreary winter Buffalo, New York, is very well-done, and even supporting parts are crisply written. Unfortunately, in the last ten minutes of the film, the writer/director finds it necessary to come up with a happy Hollywood ending for virtually all her characters, even the nonhuman ones, vitiating any sting the movie might have had.
