Summary: It would be a good program if it was 10 bucks a disc.
It is amazing that Rosetta Stone either gets great reviews or very low. Nothing much in between. I am curious if they paid a bunch of people to write a great review as a part of their advertising campaing. I would not be surprised considering amount of money they spent on ads. One would hope they put money in software improvement and it would sell itself.
I think it is a overpriced product that falsely claims it can teach one to speak a language. It is a helpful tool in acquiring vocabulary, some expressions etc. It has no grammar explanations, no dictionary, lousy access to translation etc. Translation is provided in a printed version. How pathetic for a "computer program". It would be funny if they provided it carved in stone like the original Rosetta. Even after completing all three levels one will be far from fluency. Level 3 is low intermediate level at best. They teach very little verb conjugation and drill mostly third person forms. It is not very useful to speak in third person only - for obvious reasons. If one decides to spend five hundred dollars on materials to learn Spanish, this would be money poorly spent. This amount of money can buy combination of different programs both computer and audio based much more likely leading to successful mastery of Spanish.
One star for very poor "bang for the buck" value and false claims that it is complete program to learn a language.

Summary: Not for those that learned phonics in school
I've been using the software for about two weeks, granted that's not much time to learn a new language, and have been so frustrated with its teaching style that I have thrown the whole box on the floor several times. In all honesty I could care less to learn how to write in the language as I am in learning how to speak it. I was taught how to speak in English by first learning the alphabet and knowing how each letter sounds, not by a picture of a car and writing "car" above it then saying the word. I had to sound out every letter in the word before I was allowed to say the word. Rosetta Stone never teaches you the alphabet, nor how to "sound it out", for the life of me I can't seem to say a single word in Spanish because I have now idea how to sound it out. I see a word written in the Spanish and I know what it means but I couldn't say it. Rosetta Stone says that it does not use "word recognition" as a means of learning, but to me it sounds a lot like it. Of course that's just my style of learning, if you learn better using "word recognition" then this is an excellent package, but if you learn by "phonics" as I do then try something else.

   Summary: Rosetta Stone Spanish
This is great software, but seemingly overpriced for what it offers. The only thing I was unhappy with is the fact that this software does not have a translation system built into it- You have to guess what the words are from the pictures you are viewing. Overall a decent way to learn elementary Spanish.

Summary: Good, but could be better
I like the program overall, but there are a few things that could definitely be better considering the money you must pay for the software. I bought Levels 1,2, and 3. Problems I've found are: (1) The CD's and program do not install in your computer, therefore you must work with a CD in a drive. This means you have a constant "whirring" sound to accompany your learning. Gets annoying after a while. (2) You can't make archival copies of the originals to work from which means you run the risk of accidentally scratching your original CD (from constantly having to put the CD in and take it out of the drive each time you work the program). Scratch your original CD and you are out a lot of money! (3) Even with a fast computer, the program works quite slow due to being forced to work from the CD. I found myself often waiting for the computer to read information from the CD before I could progress with the lessons.

I'm disappointed with being forced to work from the CD's to make the program function and especially the accidental risk of damaging the CD's and basically losing a costly investment.

Surely in this day and age a prominent company such as Rosetta Stone could come up with a better operation for their software to be used than what they currently have for their customers.

   Summary: Learning by repetition
Excellent learning tool, concentrating on repetition which is very important in learning especially when it comes to languages. *However* you need to have a basic understanding of grammar before you view it (like a basic spanish class at the very least) because you need to use your brain and distiguish varous situations shown on the cd. Do not pay attention to some people whinning about the lack of translation, you will be better served by figuring out some words on your own(this is not meant to be learning by vegetation on the screen, but to possibly have a dictionary close by). * I would lower my rating if I could, The stone people could have easily included few pages of grammar. which in very neccessary in learning instead of two forms of conj, but they didnt'. You need allot more than this series to learn the language.
One tip I will share with you, when you try to comprehend some sentences, do NOT translate into your native language first, but immediately form an image in your head of the explanation, this will improve the learning speed.
