| Generously sized and tapered toward the rims to intensify and concentrate bouquet, the six glasses in this set are perfect for serving full-bodied red wines. Each glass has a capacity of 17 ounces so it can hold a full serving and still have ample evaporation surface for a wine's full aroma to rise in its tapered chimney. The glasses are machine-blown of 5 percent lead crystal, providing excellent transparency and brilliance for showcasing color and clarity. Elegant, finely balanced, lightweight yet sturdy, they have thin rims to ensure smooth sipping and are dishwasher-safe. Each glass is 8-1/2 inches high. Located in a small Bavarian town that bears the company's name, Spiegelau has been making glassware for nearly 500 years.  Written on December 30, 2007 Summary: Very good glasses. I like wine and drink a few middle price wines. These glasses are fine but very sturdy. I do only hand wash them as it seems a shame to ruin nice glass in dishwasher. I think they are much better value than Riedel glasses.  Written on November 19, 2007 Summary: Nice, but fragile Despite my having read the reviews about fragility, my set of 6 new Spiegelau glasses turned into 5 after just one use. I was trying to be as delicate as possible while hand-washing, but the bowls on these glasses are so thin that they snap like Wheat Thins. I'm thinking I might try the dishwasher from now on, because I just can't be any more gentle with these. The glasses are nice, but far more fragile than any crystal I've had in the past. Maybe Spiegelau's short glasses are sturdy, but if you want a tall glass, then you simply have to go with something heavier. Written on October 24, 2007 Summary: great value I discovered these wine glasses at Amazon several years ago, and have the red and white sets. They fit in my dishwasher, and due to the reasonable price, we use them every day. Alas, sometimes unloading and loading results in a loss, so I recently ordered more.We aren't crazy about the huge over-sized glasses,or the stemless ugly ones that Riedel has managed to market. (Spiegelau is owned by Riedel.) We love the look, feel, and concentrated nose that the tapered top allows. And losing one or two a year doesn't break the bank. Written on January 3, 2007 Summary: Great glasses at a great price I've bought these glasses five times. Not because I have huge parties with lots of people drinking wine out of fabulous glasses--I have cheaper glasses for those functions. I keep buying them because I love drinking out of them, but we've had a breakage problem. Finally, I took time to read the manufacturer's instructions. "Don't hold the glass by the stem to dry," they say. "That causes torque and your glasses will break." The only glass we've lost since this revelation has to do with clumsiness and red wine and a light green carpet, and nothing to do with the fragility of the glasses. |
