Several years ago, an article in Wine Spectator magazine noted the importance of a high-quality glass for improving a wine's looks and enhancing its bouquet. However, the magazine lamented, many of the attributes that increase the beauty and value of the glass actually obscure the wine. Spiegelau's Vino Grande series is part of a connoisseur line designed specifically for wine lovers. The thin rim means less distraction from the taste and texture of the wine. Tap the glass gently with your fingernail and you'll hear the distinctive ping of fine crystal. This generously sized wine glass measures 9 inches high and is designed to showcase the Bordeaux region's Cabernet Sauvignons and Merlots. The glasses are billed as dishwasher-safe and are sturdy enough for everyday use, as proven by their use in restaurants. Still, we'd recommend hand washing. --Irene Svete |

 Written on June 5, 2002 Summary: Big and beautiful I couldn't bring myself to spend the money on Reidel glasses, and these are a great alternative. They really do make wine drinking more enjoyable. The size and shape of the glass brings out the aroma of reds beautifully. The rims are thin, and the glass balances nicely in your hand. The generous size also makes for a striking table setting. Very satisfied. Written on January 8, 2002 Summary: Great glass These glasses are attractive and always noticed by guests. They are used in my household on a routine basis and truely enhance the enjoyment of wine. Too tall for my dishwasher! Written on June 8, 2001 Summary: Quite nice, but not the perfect choise I really like these glasses, but they do have a couple drawbacks in my opinion. First, the pros: 1) Crystal look and feel and sound 2) Nice design and overall shape 3) Large capacity for big wines 4) Comparable to Riedels, but 1/2 the price Some 'cons': 1) Man! These things are big! I mean, at 9 inches tall, they're at least and inch taller than the big Riedels 2) Some visual distortion through the glass down near the bottom. Perhaps the glass is thicker, creating refraction. The Riedels don't suffer from this - perfect 'optics' all the way to the step. |
