Summary: Excellent Game for Creativity and Learning for Kids From a 7 yo boy: Its the best game I ever had in my life. I wish there were so many more. You should get this game because you can evolve from 1 cell to a whole species. The levels are great and fun to beat. From Mom: My son now completely understands concept of evolution in a more comprehensive manner than he would from a school book. Plus his creativity and puzzle solving are honed. It is a game about evolving your own ability to keep beating each level. The graphics are beautiful. Summary: Monotonous and Limited. I purchased this game on a whim. It had been hyped and I decide what the heck the kids will like it. That's where the problems begin. I installed it and it didn't work on the first computer. Another computer was having problems so I installed it on my wife's laptop as an interim solution. Well hell. 3 installs later I don't even have it on the one computer it was supposed to be on and I'm done. That's thanks to DRM. EA says they upped the number of installs to 5. Good thing because one of the computers died. The thing is I lost interest in the game. Never mind the DRM. Not a single person in my family finished the game. We played, it got monotonous, and that was that. You can see the potential but the game just falls short. Then there is the DRM. Sorry but every program I've ever purchased that had online activation has been a hassle. This is no different. I wasted my time, I wasted my money. I can't even sell it at a loss and try something different because of online activation and the limited number of installs. Summary: In Spore nothing you do matters. So...I was totally excited to get this game before it came out. I bought it the first week and played it for a good while. I really like exploring the various options in a game when I first start playing, so I often play the 1st segments a few times before playing to completion. It was during that time that I realized a few things about the game (I've yet to find myself willing to expend the time to finish it): 1. The creature you build has very little variety from any other creature. There are a few bonuses that you get (Which you can totally live without)for following each of the three paths. Once you get to the space stage (the 'main' part of the game) the path you took has very little bearing on how you play. 2. It's WAAAAY too easy. I played on hard and never faced any sort of challenge. There are no consequences to losing at any point, since you are simply respawned with nothing lost. 3. It's really repetitive. Once you've been in space for about 10 minutes you've done all you're going to do. And you'll do it many, many times. 4. In the creature stage (my personal reason for actually buying the game) the various bits you can change about your creature have no effect in game. If you give you're creature 2 legs or 4 it moves at the same speed. 6 eyes? So what. They work the same as 1. 5. The tribal and civilization stages are VERY easy and very boring. Even the first time through they'll bore you. 6. There's a lot of micromanagement when you're in space. Space is BIG in this game (I mean you might think it's a long way down to the chemistists, but that's peanuts to space!) and you might find yourself traveling for a few minutes just to return to a planet to deal with a simple problem. No problem is too small for you to deal with either. Through spending lots of $ (in game) you can make this better, but it never goes away. 7. During the space design there is no pretense that any choices you make are important. You're spaceship can have 10 guns on it..but it will act the same as a spaceship with 1. At least in the earlier stages some benefits are given based on design. 8. It was sold as a science game...there is nothing scientific about it. 9. There are a lot of things (buildings, ships, creatures) that are shaped like..body parts..wandering around. It gets very old very fast. 10. There's a lot of clicking. LOTS of clicking. Basically the game just wasn't that exciting. After playing for about 2 weeks I lost interest and moved on to other games. I just loaded it up a few minutes ago, played for 10 and quit. The worst part is that due to the copy-protection scheme I can't sell this game used to anyone (because they have no way of verifying how many times I installed it). If you are considering this game, do yourself a favor and wait until it retails for $19.99. You'll feel ok spending that much on it, but any more and you'll feel ripped off. Summary: DRM makes this game a $40 Rental Got tired of playing the game after a week. but still like to create Creatures now and than in Creature Creater and posting them on YouTube. Summary: A great game, DRM woes aside I'm not going to tell you the basic game structure, as you already know it. I'm going to tell you what I think of the game. Spore is a great game. It has revolutionary concepts, vivid visuals, and unlimited playback value. It's a shame that so many bad reviews are dragging down its rating. That's not to say, however, that the game doesn't have its problems. Starting with the good: Spore is simply a blast to play. It really combines 5 completely different games (some better than others) into one: from a little game of Pac-Man with tentacles, to a slightly watered-down civilization sim. You can keep playing this game for hours and hours, figuring out how to create omnivores and how to visit Earth and communicate with humans. There has quite honestly never been a game like it before. The bad: The DRM is a bit of a pain. It's not, however, as bad as the other reviewers would have you think. So what if there's only three activations? That means you can put it on three different computers. There are doubtfully more than three people in your household with their own computers who would like to play Spore. Also, there is a chance of activation servers shutting down, but if you've already registered Spore, what does it matter? In addition, some of the stages become quite tedious. Creature stage becomes "more of the same" near the end of it, and civilization stage really is very bad. Space stage goes on endlessly, so you can stop your game whenever you want. Overall, this is not a five-star game. It isn't perfect, and most games aren't. But this is definitely a great game, and I would say that it is well worth your fifty dollars. It looks great on a Mac screen. This is a game you will find yourself enjoying for a long time. Thanks for reading! -Nick |
