   Summary: Musically Satisfying
Jerry Goldsmith is not a novice when it comes to writing soundtracks. He's been around for many years, and considered one of the best in the field. So it is of no wonder that Star Trek, well-known for only choosing the best of the best, has Jerry for their primary composer. Backed by his equally talented son, Joel, the duo manage to capture the essence of the movie, and add a real sense of atmosphere. From the beautiful euphonium piece in the introduction to the sharp, electronic, eerie tunes that are associated with the half-human, half-machine Borg, this soundtrack is definately one of Goldsmith's best. With the addition of Steppenwolf's Magic Carpet Ride, and Ooby Dooby, which tops off the soundtrack nicely, this soundtrack impliments all aspects of the movie into a beautifully composed album.
The only problem associated is that a few notible tracks from the movie are not included, but to include them would only make this album better.
A great piece of work, and muchly recommended to anyone who likes Star Trek, especially the movie

   Summary: Loose yourself in it.
This is one of if not the best Star Trek Soundtrack out there. It takes you trough te movie on an arrangment of strings, brass, and percusion. there is not a space in between tracks so it's just constant music. It has the classic TNG theme then the favorite Klingon "march". The First Contact theme is very beautiful. This has got to be one of Jerry Goldsmiths finest compositions. Just close your eyes and you can see the Enterprise, the Borg ship, the trip through the temperal wake, earth assimilated, The Enterprise being assimilated, and the launch of the Phoenix. It's music you don;t just listen to, you feel it, expeirence it. It's something to loose yourself in. Plus it's an enhanced CD. Bt that's nothing compared to the music on this CD. A must have for the true trekker. Live long and prosper.

   Summary: Engage
I love to write. I write for children from 0 to young adults. I love SF/fantasy and so when I sit down at this computer to write my next chapter, I inevitably slip in the First Contact CD. The music is not only calming and beautiful just to listen to, but it makes it possible for me to engage my imagination as well. The music helps me to get through writers block and helps me to see solutions to problems that arise in my writing.

What? You say you're not a writer? Well, don't let that stop you. This CD is a great one to play if your ears have been accosted by to much heavy metal (traffic) or a hectic day at work. So engage it and relax.

Summary: "highly stimulating, Red Alert is truly goose bump material"
The main theme begins with the very familiar "STAR TREK" theme from Alexander Courage, with Jerry Goldsmith writing a theme which seems to be for Picard, as he struggles against the Borg in his dreams---opening theme is original "STAR TREK:FIRST CONTACT", which gives a person goose bumps just sitting there...this is Mr. Goldsmith's third "STAR TREK" score.

Of course there are stand outs---"RED ALERT", is truly one of Goldsmith's best work, very short, but powerful in text---the entire score follows this path tried and true---must make mention of "RETREAT", composed by Jerry's son(Joel Goldsmith), is simply superb, exhilarating inclusive action sections.

Highlight is "END CREDITS", use of "STAR TREK V" version of the Motion Picture theme with the "FIRST CONTACT" theme in between "END CREDITS" are fantastic, also very unusual---two classic rock songs follow at the end of the score..."OOBY DOOBY" by Roy Orbison and "MAGIC CARPET RIDE", by Steppenwolf, nice touch.

Great addition to any "film-score-buffs" collection---ten page booklet, number photographs, drawings of the ships used in "FIRST CONTACT", and CD-ROM capabilities...what more could a TREKIE as for?
