Summary: Good To The Film, Not To The Ears Sadly
Star Trek IV is among one of the finest Star Trek movies of them all, combining its quirky and somewhat memorable humour...however Trek movies usually provide top-notch scores...and sadly The Voyage Home falls flat on its back here.

Some scores for example The Motion Picture, being as old a movie as it is...the score by Goldsmith has not ages at all, nor has Horners The Wrath of Khan score.

The 1980's is ever present in ST:IV, and while what sounds good in the movie, it does not upon listening to it solo.

Summary: Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
I seen that a person had said that Star Trek IV the soundtrack has no memorable themes, well, it doesn't need memorable themes. Everybody knows that it was about the whales and Leonard Rosenman did an excellent job in that aspect of scoring, he also captured the humor of the film, (the end part of "Gillian Seeks Kirk", "Chekov's Run", and "Hospital Chase") also added the Yellowjackets piece "Market Street". Sadly, the familiar Trek theme is only found in a short little piece along with the new Star Trek IV theme, in the beginning "Main Title" and the ending "Home Again". But even though the Trek theme is not widely used, you still feel in some way that this still is Star Trek music. Buy this only if you love the movie or are a big Star Trek fan.

Summary: Why didn't Fantasy Films and Saul Zaentz sue?
The main title is a direct steal from Ralph Bakshi's 1978 animated feature "The Lord of the Rings". Some complain that composer James Horner's work following "Star Trek II" was too derivative. Hell, for that matter you can hear phrases from "Battle Beyond the Stars" in "Trek II".

But Rosenman elevates self-plagiarism to an art form. He essentially lifted the primary end title melody from "Rings" and plunked it directly into "Trek". I don't understand why Fantasy Films and Saul Zaentz (the producers of "Rings") didn't sue Paramount's pants off over this one. (Perhaps an agreement was reached that didn't involve litigation.)

That the CD only contains 35 minutes of music is a blessing. The remainder of the score is a disjointed, cacophonous melange of unrelated cues that are unmemorable at best and at worst a distinct distraction from the film's action, the most deadly sin a composer can commit.

Perhaps Rosenman didn't have time to construct a score with a cohesive theme and was forced to use material culled from other projects.

In any event, you'd be much better of getting the main title from a collection. Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have released a number of Trek-related CDs, at least one of which contains an excellent rendition of the main title.

As for the score being nominated for an Academy Award; bear in mind, this is the same outfit that gave Best Picture honors to "The English Patient."

To paraphrase the President of Earth in the movie... Save yourself; avoid this soundtrack at all costs.

Summary: Goldsmith kicks the butt while Horner punches the face...
The only good pieces in this score are the beginning and end titles, and Chekov in the Hospital!. Everything else is unoriginal filler. Three songs do not justify the retail price of this album! The only good thing about this score is, if you buy it, you won't have to buy any other soundtracks that this Rosenman fellow has written since they all sound pretty much the same. The other good point is that the score at least works okay in the movie, but is unlistenable in of itself unless this is your first time listening to Rosenman's works in general. Courage's, Goldsmith's, Horner's, Eidelmann's, and even McCarthy's symphonic renditions of the Star Trek films all kick this score's sorry @$$ towards the event horizon into "what they used to call a black hole."(ST:TMP) If you REALLY must buy this score, try your best to obtain one in the used bin. Beware of eBay, though. It almost seems like anyone will pay much more than what a particular item is really worth in many occasions there! - Reinhart

Summary: Leonard Rosenman, the king of Star Trek music!
I received this film a long time ago and I didn't think there was a soundtrack to it until I typed it in. This is the only soundtrack of his I have. Leonard received a academy award nomination for this film. My favorite tracks are 2, 3, 4, 5, oh, let's just say all of them. I'm so glad that they added in the two pieces played by the Yellowjackets. Leonard Rosenman is the man at Star Trek music, and any other music he has composed, including his two adaptions, at which he received an academy award for each.
