Professional Review:

"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." It's been 30 years since those immortal words were first seen on movie screens nationwide and it was the start of a worldwide phenomenon and the beginning of the most successful movie franchise of all time.

The Star Wars Vault: Thirty Years of Treasures from the Lucasfilm Archives, With Removable Memorabilia and Two Audio CDs by Stephen J. Sansweet and Peter Vilmur (HarperEntertainment; on-sale October 30, 2007; $85.00) is the official illustrated book celebrating this year's 30th anniversary of George Lucas' first Star Wars movie, and includes removable reproductions of memorabilia, along with two CDs containing vintage radio ads, original cast interviews, George Lucas' commentary, and even Carrie Fisher singing in the Star Wars Holiday Special.

The Star Wars Vault is the insider's look at the development and making of all six movies, and the huge cultural impact they've had. In addition to hundreds of photos and pieces of artwork, the book includes fifty interactive, rare, and some never-before-seen pieces of memorabilia.

Among the book's features are:

  • The special questionnaire for the first and only test screening of the original Star Wars — and the invitation to attend it
  • George Lucas' hand-written treatment for The Empire Strikes Back
  • Lucasfilm Christmas cards
  • Iron-on T-shirt transfer
  • The very first concept sketch drawn for Star Wars
  • Blueprints of Star Wars vehicles and sets
  • Original hand-written directions for ground-breaking special effects

The Star Wars Vault is the ultimate, one-of-a-kind insider's look into the sensation that launched a phenomenon that includes six feature films; two spin-off films; three television series with more to come; and an extensive collection of licensed books, comics, video games, action figures, trading cards, and many other products worldwide.

Summary: For 'almost' any fan of Star Wars...
I am 38, and as old school as Star Wars fans get. I saw Star Wars 7 times in my local theater in the summer and fall of 1977. Please keep this background in mind as you read my review, because the type of Star Wars fan you are (or your gift receiver is) will affect the enjoyment derived from this product.

When I first heard about this book, I was lukewarm at best. I had seen a lot of Star Wars books come out in the last 15 years that were nothing more than cheap, base-line attempts to drag as much money out of fans as possible. When I first saw this book, I couldn't speak for a couple of minutes. Words were not sufficient. By the time I had looked at the first 4 pages of my Mom's just-bought copy, I closed the book and immediately ordered my own. As soon as I received it (no problems with shipping or damage here), I spent the next several hours in a place I haven't been to since Return of the Jedi premiered in 1983. I've seen these movies so many times that the special feeling of seeing "A long time ago in a galaxy far away" has been replaced by a warm, background feeling. It's still great, but it's not the same as fresh discovery. This book is page after page of fresh discovery. I have long considered myself a master of all things Star Wars, but 2 pages of this book rarely went by without me discovering information that I didn't know before I read it. If this book was just text and pictures, it would be at the top of my Christmas recommendations. But there's so much more...

On almost every 2-page spread, there is a piece of memorabilia to touch, fold out, pull out, examine, and pore over. Letterhead, T-shirt transfers, posters, surveys, programs, are just the beginning. Reading a lengthy poster prologue from an early prototype, you realize again just how incredible it is that Lucas, or whichever writer, had the vision to go with "A Long Time Ago, in A Galaxy Far, Far Away...". I can't tell you about the 2 CDs that come with the book, because I haven't had a chance to listen to them. I have no doubt that they will be just as high quality as the rest of this volume.

As a last little nugget, I leave with this: Arnold Schwarzenegger owes Harrison Ford about a billion dollars. When you read why, you'll know it. If you, or anyone you know, feels anything about Star Wars like I do, get this book. It is the greatest gift I have ever received, and that may include the gift of life that I received 38 years ago...

Summary: One of the best hands down
OK, I have been a huge Star Wars fan since the saga began
in 1977. I have to say that this is the BEST collection of
memoribelia that has ever been put together in one place.
Steve Sansweet is the perfect person to put something like
this together. It has everything from an orignial T-shirt
iron-on that you can iron on if you wish. To blueprints.
And that is just the (huge) book. It also comes with 2 cd's
that have everything recorded like vintage radio ads,
interviews, and the long lost and thought to have been lost
version of Carrie Fisher singing the song she sung for
Chewbacca in the Holliday Special back in 1978.

This set has everything a true Star Wars fan could enjoy
and appricate. I didn't want to spend that much money on
a book but I am very glad I did. If you Love Star Wars and
enjoy looking through hours of memoribela I strongly
recomend this book. You won't be dissapointed.

This is not a book for the average fan.
If you don't really like Star Wars this book will be a waste..
This is just how I feel.

Thank you for reading and "May the Force be with you........"
