| The party line on most Windham Hill products seems to be that it's either the greatest stuff since wave machines, or that it all sounds alike. On a Starry Night, with its collection of world songs and reputable artists such as Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, the Turtle Island String Quartet, and others, does lean toward a seamlessly understated, homogeneous quality that is broken only occasionally by Bobby McFerrin's piece and a couple of others. That said, there can hardly be a more mellow or sonorous album of kid's music anywhere. Starry Night could calm a nursery with no nurses; why, it could even soothe the pained yelps at the dog pound--and turn a freeway full of bumper-to-bumper sour pusses into pussycats. Effective? Written on October 24, 2005 Summary: Peaceful Music I love even the thousandth time We received this as a gift shortly after the birth of our son, and it was a godsend from the start. These aren't the kind of lullabies that make you want to throw the stereo out the window, nothing nearly so syrupy or bland. I don't get sick of them either, because there's plenty of variety. Instead, it's a collection of various artists singing soothing yet really interesting music. George Winston's quiet piano, Bobby McFerrin's voice, they are all songs I might listen to even if we didn't have a baby- but the mood is perfect. We listen to it every night at bedtime, and I buy it for my friends when they have children. Written on October 24, 2005 Summary: Perfect for babies I bought this CD for my 5 month old daughter. She falls to sleep with it everytime. It's one of my favorites to play for her. Very sweet and gentle melodies. Money well spent! Written on October 20, 2005 Summary: Soothing for all This CD is great for relaxing and wind-down as well as through the nap/sleep times. My 19-mo-old son and I like it. The music is consistant in tone and rhythm - unlike some others we've tried. Written on October 18, 2005 Summary: Sure-fire sleepy time soundtrack I can't guarantee that your children will zonk out within 60 seconds of your hitting the "Play" button, but I can assure you that parents will enjoy the music as much as children will. And I would say it will probably take many more listenings for you to get completely sick of it, compared with the more saccharin options on the market. It is a lovely collection, diverse enough to make it interesting through-out, not at all repetitive. At the same time a quiet mood is maintained and each track follows easily upon the one before. One other thing I like about it is that we've gotten many years of use out of it--our oldest son (he's 7) has heard it since he was a baby and still enjoys hearing it. This is a delightfully relaxing and mellow collection... our son and daughter-in-law are expecting their first child, and this is one of the CDs they will take to the hospital for labor and delivery... a big compliment, indeed. Many, many years of enjoyment ahead. We plan to buy another copy for "grandparent" use, too! |
