Professional Review:
Where has Leonard Cohen been for the past nine years? The legendary songwriter's mostly been in a Zen monastery, it turns out, obsessively rewriting and polishing the oblique, lapidary lyrics for this austere collection. Ten New Songs is arguably Sharon Robinson's record as much as Cohen's--she cowrote all the songs, plays most of the instruments (primarily a synth that seems to have freshly emerged from a chintzy 1984 power ballad), and accompanies Cohen's gloomy croak with her own crooning. This is the most subdued album Cohen's ever made, which is saying something. It's as if he no longer has time for anything in music or performance that could alter the meaning and force of his words. --Douglas Wolk

   Summary: Brilliant concept and collaboration
Since I don't know his earlier work I have no preconceptions. On my first listen, I find this album a refreshing combination of brilliant lyrics and excellent production. Leonard Cohen definately writes inspired lyrics, but equal credit for inspiration and musical brilliance goes to his collaborator, Sharon Robinson. Her voice and key tracks really stand out on this record. The best complement I could make is that this combination makes me imagine what it might be like if Tom Waits made a record with Oleta Adams, who some of you might remember made her stellar debut collaborating with Tears for Fears on the Seeds of Love album and then released the fantastic debut record Circle of One. I would love to hear more from Sharon Robinson, I have no doubt we will. Kudos to LC for his vision and insight as well.

Summary: 9 years is a long time to wait - but it's worth it
At 67, Leonard Cohen follows the monumental "The Future" with another astonishing release.

As already mentioned by others, this is as much Sharon Robinson's album as Cohen's. If, as some have said, the music sounds like it was played on one of those old Atari or Casio keyboards or a sequencer, then great, because it all works. The instrumental aspects of this album are simple and understated, a case of (a lot) less is definitely (a lot) more.

The vocals show Cohen on as good as form as his voice will ever get. The harmonies of Sharon Robinson add warmth and give the whole a beauty and lustre, so much so that it is a masterpiece.

"The Future" will not be beaten. As an album, it is, in my opinion, Cohen's greatest - and that's saying something when one consider's the brilliance of his previous albums. But on this, "By The Rivers Dark" is the absolute greatest Cohen song I have ever heard. It is a gem - and one of my favourite songs of all-time. Another reviewer suggests you will want to listen to it over and over again. Too true - it's been on repeat for the last hour and I hear something new every time I hear it. It sends a tingle down my spine!

Others which make this another memorable album are "A Thousand Kisses Deep", "Here It Is" and "Boogie Street", but the simplicity of the music and Cohen downbeat lyrics mean that there is something special in all these ten new songs.

A wonderful album - can Cohen do no wrong? I doubt it!

   Summary: Cohen did it again
After all these years, Cohen keeps up the good work. "A thousands kissing deep" and "In my secret life" manage to get to the level of his classics like 'Suzanne' and "So long Marianne".

   Summary: Oh dear.
I bought this album when it was first released, tried to listen to it once, groaned in disbelief and went back to the old stuff. I gave it a second spin today and still couldn't last out to the end. Compared with the earlier albums that could be beautiful, haunting, exciting, humerous and subversive, all at the same time, this one is just dreary to the power of ten, little more than a spoken-word recording of some new poems to a dreadful muzak background. I would have liked to listen to the poetry, as other reviewers have clearly managed to, but the whole thing just sounded so awful. How can a man who gave us Leaving Green Sleeves, Chelsea Hotel, Sisters of Mercy, Marianne and so many other wonderful - and wonderful-sounding - songs put his name to this dross?

   Summary: I could just cry.
After waiting all these years, Leonard finally came down from the mountain to deliver this mouse. Most of the song lyrics are just "Westernized" Zen cliches. You want to know the sound of one hand clapping---listen to this CD and you'll find out. Boring!!!!

The only song that shows his wry sense of humor is "That Don't Make It Junk."

Also, Leonard, spring for a real studio next time with real musicians. Trading hard-drives with Sharon (Oh, Sharon, beautiful Sharon...What Happened???!!!) just didn't pan out.

And please, Leonard, next time pick up the tempo.
