| Leonard Cohen's deeply personal first LPs came out at a time when many of his peers were issuing furious, counterculture-inspired rants; he clearly had little interest in sticking with the pack at the time. So it makes a certain kind of contrary sense that Cohen would put out an offbeat topical collection two and a half decades later. The Future is an odd duck of an album; it's also brave, funny, and fascinating. "Give me back the Berlin Wall / Give me Stalin and St. Paul," Cohen petitions sardonically in the title track, adding, "I've seen the future, brother: it is murder." "Can't run no more with the lawless crowd / While the killers in high places say their prayers out loud," he intones in "Anthem." In "Democracy," he name-checks Tiananmen Square while surveying the United States ("The cradle of the best and of the worst"). Cohen has only improved with age as a vocalist; he sounds like a cross between Mark Knopfler and Barry White. While the polished production takes some getting used to, it's somehow suitable that cooing background vocals and programmed tracks temper these low-boil diatribes. This is, after all, The Future. --Steven Stolder |

Summary: Ring the bells that still can ring The voice. A gruff gatekeeper, but holy s--t, it is protecting some prophetic wisdom and blessed poetry! These songs, to me, are the modern-day gospel hymns. I challenge any music lover not to be seduced by waiting for the miracle. I challenge any eye not to tear up listening to anthem. Yes. There is a crack in everything. . .that is how the light gets in. There are not enough adjectives to describe Mr. Cohen. Summary: Thanks for the Songs, Mr. Cohen Most of this great album is featured on "The Essential Leonard Cohen", which I've owned for a few years. Still, I bought "The Future" to enjoy the great songs I knew in their original order and context and to hear the few tracks that aren't on the later compilation. In whatever order, songs like "The Future", "Democracy", "Waiting for the Miracle", "Anthem" and "Closing Time" are all Cohen classics--each with its unique element of anger, irony, longing, reverence or joy. It's a dream of mine for someday, someone to sing "Anthem" at my church, perhaps even me. Of the "non-essential" songs, "Light as a Breeze" was the best--perhaps Cohen's most erotic song ever, though I haven't heard everything. "Be For Real" was a very loving cover--right down to the closing "Thanks for the song, Mr. Knight". Being a fan of lyrics, "Tacoma Trailer" didn't do as much for me. I'll excuse "Always" as a paean to Irving Berlin and a chance to loosen up in front of the mike. It doesn't sound like this one was done in very many takes. I haven't listened to all of Cohen's albums to be able to say that "The Future" is the best, but with its concentration of great songs, it's got to be right up there. Summary: My future will always have L. Cohen "Closing Time" is a masterpiece. Leonard Cohen is a genius. Give yourself a little time to get use to his voice if it puts you off at first. I believe he is the best songwriter ever, but I know some Dylan fans who would want to beat me up for saying that. After you listen to this, get a "greatest hits" album. Then, you'll be ready to continue your Cohen odyssey. Summary: got weltschmerz? My feelings toward Lennie are many and mixed. Since this album, I sometimes think of Lennie as "the old croaker," an old raven croaking out dark forebodings of things to come, interspersed with ironic reminiscences about this mortal coil. But I love his croakings dearly anyway. So what if he does take himself so dreadfully seriously, and has for so many years? I still like him, and enjoy his grim tunes, and really loved this album. This was a good introduction to Leonard Cohen. I saw him perform these tunes on his promotional tour for the record (yes, I'm pretty old too) when I was rather new to his songs, or so I thought, and had seldom been more moved to learn then that the song my mother played when I was a small child, and that we sang in church camp around the fire, "Suzanne," was his. The following year, I was terribly amused to watch Don Henley play "Democracy is Coming to the USA" at Bill Clinton's inauguration. Perhaps not all of us got the joke, but me and Lennie did perhaps. And "Anthem" as the soundtrack for "Natural born Killers" prison riot scenes was an absolutely brilliant choice, lifting up the horror and tragedy of such imagery to a timeless portrait of man at his worst. Perhaps this was most true to the spirit of "I've seen the future, baby. It is murder." But Lennie hasn't seen the future, he has merely seen a lot. I think the tune where he goes on about what the future will be like, well, predicting doom and gloom has always been a going concern, and always finds buyers (not really predicting. It is sort of a morbid mood he is projecting.) I can no longer take it so seriously after having the album for 10 years, and think when he "predicts" the "lousy little poets coming round, trying to sound like Charlie Manson," his intent might have been the Beatles' "Helter Skelter," or it might have been him with this song. So if you got Weltschmertz, or however you spell it, Lennie's your man, he will hook you up. Lennie definitely takes himself far too seriously, sometimes to the point of absurdity, but if you can indulge him in that, his meditations are dark and deep. This is a favorite and has been for years. Summary: Now I know what all the hoopla is about This disk was my introduction to Leonard Cohen. His voice took a little bit of getting used to, but I soon came to appreciate his deep, baritone growl. Cohen belongs to that school of singer/songwriters such as Dylan who do not have traditionally fine singing voices but who bring a dimension of emotion to their own lyrics that more than make up for any technical faults. Cohen has a fascinating point of view; I particularly enjoy the title track, in which he laments the loss of moral reference points to the point that he becomes nostalgic for the unambiguous evil represented by Stalin and the Berlin Wall. The one drawback on this recording is his long cover of "Always;" it's a giant dead spot on this disk. |
