Summary: An aptly-titled album from a timeless artist
Mendes's "Fool on the Hill" was one of the first albums that this then fifteen-year-old bought with his allowance. Thus began an almost forty-year love affair with the Brazilian's sound. One can't imagine my excitement when I learned of the release of "Timeless," his first album of new music in over a decade.

And what an album it is!!! The disc is an outstanding blend of the old and the new, with cuts to satisfy the contemporary crowd as well as those of us with nostalgia of the soul.

Though the album features guest performances from the likes of Justin Timberlake to Jill Scott to John Legend, the best cuts are those that harkens back to the cool 1960's, adding a new dimension with rap and modern rhythms. The revisit of "Mais Que Nada," "Berimbau/Consolacao" (featuring vocals by Gracinha Leporace and a killer hamonica solo from Stevie Wonder), "Bananeira," the title cut (with India.Arie on vocals), "Lamento (No Morro)," "Yes, Yes Y'All," and "Samba Da Bencao," are thrilling in every way and certain to appeal to an international audience.

Bravo for Mendes and, hopefully, with the utilization of modern stars, he will reach a young audience that will discover one of music's legendary innovators.

   Summary: Great CD
I first heard this CD while working at Starbucks. I didn't know much or really anything about Sergio, but I heard these hot songs with Will.i.am, John Legend and Jill Scott. So anyway I bought it, and it was money well spent! It's like Jazzy Hop! It's an eclectic mix of today's hip hop/r and b along with an island background that Sergio provides. You should listen to the previews and get the CD if you like it.

Summary: Solid... Not Timeless, but Not Bad either.
Hard time reviewing this one... I've had it for a while now, but couldn't make up my mind if I liked it or disliked it enough to slam it. I'm sure somewhere, someone's brought up the history of Sergio Mendes. From the old days with Brasil 66 and even to the early 90's with a 'mini' comeback with "Brasileiro" and "Oceano", you could always tell he was an amazing musician and producer. His working with various artists is nothing new either... he's done it throughout his career and on Brasileiro, he featured a young Carlinhos Brown on the album. This time he's gone a bit more mainstream (USA) and the Black Eyed Peas came to help him out with this one. How is it?

Not bad... it is what it is, and IMO it's a fun 'in-the-moment' album with some notable highlights. Not all of the tracks here were written by Sergio Mendes though; many are staples in Bossa Nova, done but Joao Donato, Vinicius De Morais and Baden Powell. The big tracks for this were "Mas Que Nada", a Sergio Mendes classic. This version, heavy with beats, was used for the Nike Brasil commercial for the World Cup in 2006... sort of a throwback, as the old Tamba Trio version was popular and used in the 1998 Nike World Cup commercial for Brasil where the players were playing in the airport. Having said all that, I don't care for the version on this album. I did like the version of the classic Consolacao/Berimbau, which featured Stevie Wonder. Very nicely done - not over the top, but just enough to give it a real neat spark and if the rest of the album followed a simpler vibe, it would've been amazing. Definitely check out the old one done by Baden Powell though. "The Frog", featuring Q-Tip, might be the most popular. The Brazilian soap-opera "Cobras & Lagartos" used the song quite a bit when showing Rio or the luxury department store. It's got a nice flow to it, fantastic beat and great energy. Maybe one of the better remakes of it out there, otherwise the only other version of it I liked was by Joao Donato. But that, IMO, is the only time rap works on this album and even there, it's close. "Surfboard" was ok although the rap doesn't fit (the pattern continues). In fact, I don't care much for this version at all. Hey - you want to hear a remake to this classic done by Stereolab with Herbie Mann as they blended "One Note Samba" with "Surfboard". THAT's wonderful fusion with a very dreamy feel... nevre would have imagined the two going together so seamlessly together and it holds a crazy 60's vibe to it. Some highlights to me were "Samba De Bencao" featuring Marcelo D2, a DJ in Brasil getting more press by the day and I really liked the way India Arie did "Timeless". Oh... and I also liked "E Menina" which has a very real, very vintage Mendes feel to it. The only thing missing in this album might've been Hermeto Pascoal on sanfona!

There's plenty of good in this album, I'd give it about 3 stars. The more gentle side is what I liked... the negative is that with some of the tracks, the new marriage was very forced and didn't fit to me; especially the rap side and some of the hollow and cliche'd lines. It's also so clear that this was made for the main-stream USA market... almost like a compilation. Brazilian music purists will probably hate this album and borderline call it an abomination... especially Brazilian music purists that probably are not even Brazilian. So it might be good to approach this with an open mind and listen to it for what it is... a pop/fusion product. Nothing wrong with that, I or anyone else can always go back to the originals.

The fusion aspect isn't really new... there's been some great soul groups now experimenting with USA styles and Brazilian rhythms & melodies, and Brazilian popular artists have been taking styles from all over for YEARS now. But this is a bit original and has that extra spark that Mendes can only bring, and I'll admit I'm not a big time rap fan but some of the artists did a great job. If you like this (or don't, and expected something better), definitely check out work by soul groups Jiva, The Rebirth, Julie Dexter & Khari Simmons "Moon Bossa", maybe the soundtrack to a few of the Brazilian soaps like "Bellissima" or "Cobras & Lagartos". You might also want to check out "Red Hot & Rio". It was from 1996, but featured some then very popular artists from all over the world, like Money Mark of the Beastie Boys, Incognito, Marisa Monte, David Byrne, Sterelab, Milton Nascimento, George Michael, Everything But the Girl, Caetano Veloso, Bebel Gilberto, Maxwell, Sting and loads more. Personally, I rate that compilation far higher. Also, by ALL means, check out some of the original classic versions of these songs.

Summary: A Must Have for the Sergio Mendes Fan
I have been a fan of Sergio Mendes since the 60's. I also happen to like the Black Eyed Peas. This album meshes the two together in a way that truly works magic. Excellent album - you wont be disappointed.
