Professional Review:
Rock bastardizations of classical music are as old as Kim Fowley's--and ELP's--Tchaikovsky tweaking "Nutrocker." But classical interpretations of rock music have generally been something of a high-wire act. While most pop fare has strong melodic foundations for the soloist to build from, Christopher O'Riley has challenged himself here with the catalog of Radiohead, one of modern rock's most acclaimed--and texturally complex--bands. O'Riley's insightful gifts for interpretation (which have previously enlightened everything from Stravinsky to P.D.Q. Bach) produce a hypnotic, emotionally compelling listening experience here; O'Riley is a huge Radiohead fan, and that love courses through everything from the dreamy, bittersweet title track through the brooding loveliness of "Let Down." Radiohead's stock in trade is dense, multi-layered music that leans heavily on electronic processing for its moody sonic atmospherics; O'Riley's evokes those complex textures with but a judicious use of the sustain peddles, a deft use of dissonance (as on "Knives Out"), and a rhythmically anxious left hand. Call them etudes for the post-modern age if you will, but O'Riley's performances here largely achieve what all great interpretations strive for: New insight and enlightenment. --Jerry McCulley

   Summary: nope, muzak this aint
because muzak are supposedly non-offensive. this guy and his "re-interpretation" of radiohead are definitely offensive. i previously heard bits of some mp3 off this cd and thought there were some creative ideas. so when he came to campus to play a concert, i signed up to go hear him -- wow what a mistake that was. he just bangs the crapp out of the poor piano, and threw his head and hands all over the place like he is about to have an out of body experience -- it is all very theatrical and no substance. the build up to some songs were pretty powerful, but after one hears two songs under his treatment then its like: ok so what else is new? my friends and i were so ready to jet, but unfortunately we couldnt, since it was for a class assignment that we had to stay through the concert. damn. well good thing we didnt have to pay though. the school sponsored it. i wouldnt pay anything for this. may i suggest, if anyone who is interested in "re-interpretation" of radiohead's music, please do not waste money on this. save up to 1. go see radiohead in concert or 2. buy the imports where they usually redo their own songs in different, and surprising, quality ways. somebody please stop this christopher o'riley.

   Summary: insulting
This must be what getting slapped in the face, repeatedly, feels like. All the bombard and noises add up to one disappointing result: I find myself secretly wishing this guy would stop. Perhaps Radiohead would sue the living crap out of this 'pianist' .... and I use the term pianist very loosely here..... for ruining their exellent music. Really, listening to this stuff is like watching someone drawing a moustache on Mona Lisa.

   Summary: Romantic Radiohead?
After hearing O'Riley on NPR talking about his love of classical music, and his obsession with Radiohead, it seemed like this would be a delightful, insightful meeting of musical minds. Not so, alas! These are romanticized arrangements which make hash of the subtlety and suggestive layering that make Radiohead's music so appealing to me, a classical music maniac. Although much of the disc is pleasant, it would not be out of place in the Windham Hill or Narada catalogs. Sometimes, O'Riley resorts to plain old, ham-handed emoting. There may still be an interesting instrumental redaction of Radiohead's music to be made, but I suspect it might almost have to be an acoustic/electronic hybrid, a la one of those Budd/Eno collaborations of the 80's. This disc might appeal to those solidly in the musical middle of the road, not to hard core classical or Radiohead fans.

   Summary: Sublime.
The subtlety with which O'Riley interprets Radiohead give the listener new insight into their brilliant compositions. It's incredible to listen to one piano being coaxed into provoking that much depth and resonance. There's some fantastic playing on here. It's a worthwhile purchase even if you don't know Radiohead, but enjoy virtuoso piano-playing. Fantastic.

   Summary: A Delight
I LOVE Radiohead with capital letters.
Christopher O Reily loves them as well and, moreover, releases a cd covering their songs.
What could go wrong?

Contrary to popular belief, nothing does thank god. Songs like Let Down, Motion Picture Soundtrack or Black Star are even elevated to new heights of emotion and extasis (yes, this adjectives perfectly suit this album).

If I had to point out weak tracks (needless to say, there aren't any), I'd do so only based on the fact that some songs could not surpass the original ones: as much as Everything in its right place, Exit Music (for a film) or True Love Waits (I've only hear this one on the I Might Be Wrong Cd, so I'm taking that as the original) are exceptionally executed, they are not be groundbraking for any fan.

Last but not least, what struck me the most was the fact that these brilliant interpretations welcome us listeners to jump right in and sing the lyrics or simply listen to new (or never before noticed) arragements. A Delight.
