Professional Review:
Gary Gene Watson never intended on a career in music. When you take a look at the tracks on this Ultimate Collection, it becomes evident his absence would have left a gaping hole in country music, for as one of Nashville's premiere country journalists, Robert K. Oermann, has said, "The world stops spinning when he sings." So, while, as Watson says, "I never did go looking for music, music found me," music was obviously destined for this unassuming man born in Palestine, Texas and raised in Paris, Texas. But because he took his singing in church, and with his 6 siblings, for granted, never considering that it could be a profession, to this day it is difficult for him to trace the origin of his realization that indeed it would end up being the crux of his life.

"As far back as I can remember talking, I can remember singing. My brother just younger than me played lead guitar and I was the singer, and we would entertain at a lot of the school functions and local get-togethers. But music was never one of my goals. All I ever dreamed of was working on cars," says Watson, who still enjoys dabbling on cars in his little Houston shop.

By 17, he was married (still is, to the same woman he married in 1961), and had to lie about his age to get a job building missile silos in Abilene. Six years later, in 1966, Watson moved to Dallas where an uncle helped him get his first professional job as a singer at a club called The Palms. Still, he didn't take the possibility of making a living at music seriously, until moving to Houston where he formed a band called Gene Watson and the Other Four, dropping the Gary from his name.

   Summary: Brilliant CD
If you happen to have single songs by Gene Watson on C&W
compilations which you probably liked - Paper Rosie - and
you would like to know more about him GET THIS CD!
I was as astonished about the number of brilliant songs on
this single CD - as when I bought "It couldn't have been any
better" by Johnnie Duncan. This "Ultimate Collection" won't be
the only Gene Watson CD and I already applied for more CD's
by this real C&W singer. Ballads and honky tonk songs
will really cheer you up. The sound quality of the recordings is
brilliant as well. Quite a surprise when at least 21 out of
23 songs on a CD are all great and make you repeat them over
and over. Nowadays with those "pop rock C&W" stars more than
half of their songs can only be heard once. Their just fillers-up. It's impossible to beat those C&W voices from the 70's &
80's. Long Live the real C&W music.

   Summary: ultimate singer
gene watson not only has a voice for music .but an ear for music .as for threw the yrs he has picked some awesome songs to lend his voice to . and most are on ultimate collection .my favorite ones of his music are 14 carat mind .and memories to burn . but i love everything he has recorded .he is the last of the real deal singers . him and jones . and his music has been constant from love in the hot afternoon .to the jukebox played along . and everything in between . the first thing i ever heard from gene watson was farewell party .and was hooked on his style of music .and 14 carat mind is the best recored country song ever . and never get tired of hearing it . it sounds as good today as when he first released it . if you can not find your favorite gene song on this c d .then it would for sure be on 18 hits c d . like sittin on a gold mind .and a few others that might be missing on this c d . but as another stated with both these a person could want for nothing .and miss nothing . except winos prayer.

   Summary: Lots of Great Memories
I had never been a big Gene Watson fan, but he was a favorite of my husband who passed away in 2004. I bought the CD because of a couple of his favorite songs, but found that I loved everything on the CD myself.

   Summary: Smooth Singer
You forget how smooth Gene Watson sings. I remember reading somewhere that the worlds stops when Gene sings. It is so true. The song, "Love in the Hot Afternoon" is a classic country song.
