Summary: Actually... you can't imagine what they're like live :)
Man, what to say about this CD? It is an extremely solid collection of funk, soul, R&B and gospel tunes from one of the tightest bands I've ever seen. These guys aren't just on the same page, they might as well be telepathic. They even swap instruments in their live shows, and not the crappy gimmick instrument swapping either. The bassist can tear that steel guitar up and Robert Randolph plays the heck out of the drums too. In any event, this is a great introduction to the band's music and I highly recommend it to any fans of the above listed genres.

I feel compelled, however, to say more about the band's absolutely smoking live shows. I've seen them twice (both times at Vanderbilt University) and both times they were absolutely pheonomenal. They play like a jam band, running way over the times listed on the CD. However, they have that rarest of traits for a jam band: restraint. They know when a song has overstayed it's welcome and they move on.

They also clearly enjoy themselves live. Robert Randolph alternates between a Stevie Wonder-esque full body contortion, throwing his head back and grinning from ear to ear, and kicking his stool out from underneath him and dancing along in pure joy. Actually, I couldn't tell you what the other band members do, he's just so captivating :). During one song they brought somewhere between 30 and 50 co-eds up on the stage to dance around with the band while they were tearing it up. Seriously folks, if you like this CD move heaven and earth to see these guys live. With a good crowd, it's one of the best concert experiences you're likely to ever have.

Summary: "Unclassified"? You can classify this under "Great Funky/Sacred Steel/Blues/Soul Power FUN!
I'd heard of Robert Randolph but, until I purchased and really listened to this album, I didn't realize how fun (and funky) it would be! First off, the man can flat-out play a great lap steel guitar ("Three Stroke" proves that). However, Robert doesn't let his skills get in the way of the writing and the feeling of some great celebratory songs (Steve Vai are you listening?!). I dare you to listen to "Going in the Right Direction," "Nobody," or "I Need More Love" without having to move yourself in a happy stupid way (although the lyrics are far from stupid!). The slower songs on the recording ("Soul Refreshing", et al) are not as good, but I don't think that you could take an entire album of full-on Robert Randolph and the Family Band celebration (you'd collapse before they finished)!
In short, if you are in the mood to jump up and shout, get this album, put it in your player, and MOVE!

Summary: Robert Randolph - Studio work
Unclassified is a studio album from this fabulous group and is a very strong effort. It is more carefully crafted than "Live from the Wetlands" , and only falls short a bit in the intensity of the live concert recordings. I prefer the live album, but this is a worthwhile album to own.
