| This Rigoletto has been around for so long it might be easy to take it for granted or skip it for a newer set. Don't! It features all three principals in superb voice, as well as pacing from Maestro Bonynge that is much heavier on drama than most of us expect from him. Sutherland may sound a bit mature (and mush-mouthed) for Gilda, but not only is she sympathetic, she sings gorgeously. And speaking of gorgeous, those familiar only with the Pavarotti of the last 10 years would be wise to hear him here--this is stylish, full-blooded, Golden Age singing. The beautifully round tone, the easy high notes, the impeccable diction, and the pointed characterization are unique. Milnes, in the title role, is also in splendid voice, offering smooth legato, brilliant, Verdian ring and real attention to the text. The ADD sound is excellent. No other modern recording offers the visceral thrill of this Rigoletto--go for it. --Robert Levine |

Summary: Yes, that's 5 stars Dame Joan and Luciano are true giants of opera history. And I mean that they are the so fat that they fill out the entire stage and you can't see anyone else. I can't imagine Milnes carrying Sutherland away in a bag in the last scene. The bag must have been the size of a blimp. But I have to admit that her singing of Gilda's music is inpeccable and incomparable. What a voice! And that goes for Pav also. He was borned to sing the duke. Despite their obvious unpleasant appearance, their voices are simply too beautiful to be true. Thus, I'm a big fan of their's. Luckily, on record, you can't see them, so all you hear is lovely sound. I don't understand all that talk about Callas here. She is a no talent. And even when she was Prima donna, she was never had a nice voice, it is ugly, to say the least. That is the truth and if it hurts some people they better get over it. Callas does look good on stage. But to compare her Gilda to Sutherland's in these two Rigoletto performance is a joke. Sutherland/Pav is the best Rigoletto in my book. And Rigoletto is my favorite opera. Summary: Incredible This Rigoletto not only demonstrates how opera should be performed, it also serves as a demonstration of the capabilities of the human voice. Sutherland, although a bit too mature sounding for Gilda, sings with a beautifl voice that stays consistent even up to the stratopheric notes that the soloists take. Pavarotti is in the prime of his voice on this recording keeping a young round tone up to his high notes as well. Milnes is absolutely perfect as Rigoletto. He sings with such passion and excitement that you can't seem to put this recording down. And most importantly, this disc preserves some of the legacy of perhaps the greatest bass singer ever, Martti Talvela. He died way too early in life but he left us a masterful performance of Sparafucile. This is definitely THE Rigoletto to own. Summary: Excellent I join the praise of the other reviewers. I am extremely satisfied with my purchase. Summary: To Can Altinbay Sutherland is a golden age Gilda. And you are not telling the truth if you said that you're not comparing her to Callas. If you are not comparing her to Callas, why are you mentioning Callas? As for sounding old, no Gilda sounds as old as Callas, and I don't mean that as disrespect. Callas is a great singer, she just has a very dark voice. But it no way interfered with her ability to sing Gilda. And she is very nearly as fine a Gilda as Sutherland. Anyway, this is a super Rigoletto. Sutherland's voice is breathtaking in tone and bravura. She hits high E flats that overwhelms the listener with excitement. And her staccati and trills in Caro nome are lessons in bel canto. Pavarotti's Duke is superb. He also hits the high C's and D's beautifully, and he sounds fresh and young. Milnes is also arousing as the jester. He also attacks all the optional high notes like Sutherland and Pavorotti. He even takes a high B flat. He should have tried to attempt spinto tenor roles like Otello or Pagliacci. To sum it up, ignore the reviews of bias, immature bashers, and listen to Verdi's masterpiece sung by the true giants of opera. Summary: Listen, relax & enjoy. A stunning performance of one of the greatest operas, recorded over 30 years ago (in 1971). Pavarotti is splendid as a young & confident Duke while Milnes came as a revelation as Rigoletto. Sutherland's singing is effortlessly flawless, which in no way sounds too old for me (it remains deceptively young while having the depth that comes with years of practice). If her singing is slightly short on the pronunciation or dramatic side it remains divine. Normally Rigoletto is my second favorite opera (after Don Giovanni), though while listening to this recording it coasts to number one. I do not remember hearing a finer rendition. |
