Professional Review:
Mixing a variety of styles with a Celtic base, this was McKennitt's breakthrough album and remains one of her most musically interesting. "All Souls Night" begins the album, with dance-like rhythms and McKennitt's wonderful voice singing about the Celtic New Year. Other features include a musical setting of Tennyson's "Lady of Shalott", which, while not as sophisticated as Noyes' "The Highwayman" on The Book of Secrets, is an enchanting listen. There's also an interesting rendition of "Greensleeves" and the Spanish-flavored "Tango to Evora", as well as the haunting "Courtyard Lullaby" and the wistful "The Old Ways". A setting of words from Shakespeare's Cymbeline closes the album, which focuses thematically on life, death, and the borders between them. --Genevieve Williams

   Summary: A rare gift
I am by no means an expert on Loreena McKennitt's works. I own just this album and her most popular album The Book of Secrets. Although The Book of Secrets made Ms. McKennitt popular because of the song The Mummer's Dance, which received air play on even some popular music stations, The Visit contains some wonderful songs.

All Souls Night is a quick song about the ancient Celtic holiday Samhain. The pagans believed that on October 31st, the last day of summer, the spirits of the dead wandered the landscape looking for bodies to inhabit. The living lit bonfires, sang songs, and dressed in scary costumes to frighten away the dead. If you let your mind wander, this song can almost transport you to ancient Ireland. Historians know so little for certain about ancient pagan beliefs, McKennitt's well-studied songs and lyrics help bring this lost culture back to life.

The Lady of Shalott is the masterpiece of this album. Adapted from the poem by Alfred Tennyson, McKennitt sets it to music and brings the poem to life. Over 11 minutes long, McKennitt deleted hardly a word of the original poem, yet the music and intonation rivet the listener's attention. The poem is about a spirit or elfish woman drawn to the ancient mythical city of Camelot by the beauty of the castle and Sir Lancelot. Even the way McKennitt pronounces the word Camelot in the song conveys the sacred nature of this most important legend in English mythology. The poem and the song will touch your heart. For me, as I watch modern England quickly losing it's historic culture, this song serves as a reminder of the England that once was.

McKennitt adapts another long poem from English Literature in her later album The Book of Secrets. McKennit faithfully puts the word of Alfred Noyes' The Highwayman into a heart-wrenching song. Again, over 10 minutes long, this is a formula McKennitt does very well.

If I had to choose just one album by Loreena McKennitt, it would be The Book of Secrets. But it would be a cruel choice to have to make. I look forward to someday owning all of her works and anxiously await her next recording.

Summary: "The Green Knight holds the holly bush"
I first heard Loreena McKennitt sing on a human interest newsclip on an evening news broadcast a number of years ago, and was stunned by her vocal range. I knew that I would come across her CD's right then, and I have. I bought "The visit" with the bonus DVD mainly for the fact that my favorite song, "Mummer's Dance" is one of the songs on the DVD, but also because the Visit is excellent.

"All Soul's Night," and "The Lady of Shalott" are my favorites on this CD, but the sad "Bonny Portmore" clamors for listening as well. Her vocal range is well-exhibited by her interpretation of "Greensleeves." The addition of a spanish(?) guitar shows that a traditional song can also be enhanced and made much better by a modern rendition.

If you enjoy Enya, which I am also a fan, Or Celtic music, This CD should be a welcome addition to anyone's collection.

Summary: A Georgous and Haunting CD.
Loreena McKennitt has the most hauting and most beautiful voices I have ever heard! ''The Lady of Shalott'' is my favorite song above all other Celtic songs I've listned to. First time I heard it, I was swept away to a different world and inspired to write more Medieval/Fantasy stories. Loreena McKennitt is a Miraculous singer and any song of hers deserves 5 out of 5 every time.

Summary: The most beautiful of McKennitt's offerings
"The Visit" is superb, a beautiful collection. Loreena McKennitt begins the CD with "All Soul's Night" with lyrics and music by McKennitt, and as usual, containing her world travel adventures and sensory impressions. Then with "Bonny Portmore" we hear one of the most beautiful songs McKennitt has ever recorded. The tragedy of the loss of giant old trees is the theme of this hauntingly wonderful traditional song. McKennitt's ability to select traditional music that will appeal to contemporary listeners is outstanding. One aspect of a true master is their ability to recognize a masterpiece in the work of other artists and to present that work with minimal interference. Such is the case with John Houston's wonderful film "The Dead" and such is the case with McKennitt's spectacular presentation of Lord Alfred Tennyson's "The Lady of Shalott". Recognizing that the entire poem must be presented, McKennitt takes no shortcuts and presents us in 11 minutes of flowing verse the incredible tragic story of the Lady of Shalott. Her willingness not to cut the poem short but to support it with her beautiful voice and music reveals McKennitt for the master that she is. I wish one of my high school teachers had played this work for me to introduce me to the works of Tennyson. We then get the odd treat of a love poem by Henry VIII put to the music of the traditional Greensleeves.

There are two works that have minimal vocals and show McKennitts ability to orchestrate with world music instruments. These include the Islamic influenced "Between the Shadows" and the waltzy "Tango to Evora".

"Courtyard Lullaby" and the "Old Ways" are two works with music composition and lyrics and vocals by McKennitt. One song reflects her sensitivity to the cycles in nature and conservation whereas the other is somewhat Jungian in the connection between old rituals that remain in our contemporary culture.

The CD ends with a haunting short work, written by William Shakespeare reminding us that after all worldly power and brillance, all love and bodily beauty, all work and torment must eventually come to dust.

This CD should be in your collection of music.
