 Written on December 5, 2006 Summary: It's all about the violin concertos Everybody knows "The Four Seasons". Spring is one of the best known classical pieces of all times. Perlman's playing is lovely and the music is superb and famous for a reason, but it is my personal opinion that what is truly wonderful here is the small selection of violin concertos. These concertos are rather well known to those who are knowledgable in classical music or play an instrument (violin, in this case). To the rest of the world they are much less known, and that is a pity. These are wonderful pieces of music, played incredibly with great sound. Once you get into the smaller, finer details, you also have to notice the great price that this is offered for. With great famous pieces accompanied by some amazing violin concertos (Il Sospetto is my favorite of them all) at a low price, there is no doubt about it; this is a great CD to purchase. Written on November 11, 2006 Summary: The exliration of Vivaldi Listening to Vivaldi is an exercise in joy. He is a master of the violin concerto and that's all I have to say about that.  Written on April 16, 2006 Summary: Souless playing by Perlman At the time of Le Quattro Stagioni's conception, Vivaldi was maestro de' concerti at an all-girl's orphanage. Each year, the orphanage would hold nurmous concerts where adolescent girls would play violin behind a curiously shaded curtain. This curtain would viel everything except for the girls' figures ... and the music. Sensual perhaps, but this is exactly what music-making of the 17th century is like. Op. 8 not only remains one of Vivaldi's greatest masterpiece, but is reflective of the mastro de' concerti at his most musical and creative stage. To play such a passionate, flawless piece of music as Perlman did is, to say the least, insufficient. Perlman's techique and intonation are flawless, but behind that there is nothing else. Tempos drag (especially in the presto movement of Summer), and the dynamics are forced (listen to Winter's 1st movement). Perlamn renders this great piece of music to mere finger exercises, and does diservice to such a great piece of music. I recommand Janine Jansen's account of the reviewed album. Written on December 7, 2005 Summary: Great CD chronicling Vivaldi's Four Seasons Having a taste for classical music led me to buy this particular CD and also being a fan of violin concertos. Despite my bias, I must say this version of the Four Seasons (with some other concertos) is for any who even likes to listen to music, much less of the classical genre. The London Philharmonic complement Itzhak Perlman splendidly. Overall, the value of the CD is amazing. You get 21 tracks. There were a few small miscues in the harmony, but they were few and far between; not to mention I am very critical of instrumentals. 9 out of 10. Written on June 12, 2004 Summary: Lush and brilliant rendition of Four Seasons Not only does this CD include the Four Seasons concertos, but also 3 other violin concertos (including Il Sospetto, L'estro armonico No. 6, and La Stravaganza #5) making it a good value for the money. Perlman's style is warm, lush and brilliant, giving a more emotional rendition of Vivaldi, versus the usual austere clockwork interpretation. I rather enjoy the extra feeling and lushness that Perlman brings to Vivaldi. By the way, L'estro armonico #6 is familiar to many violin students as a student concerto, and listening to Perlman is very motivating. |
