Professional Review:
2008 album from the forward-thinking Swedish titans, who seemlessly and fluidly combine Metal, Classic Rock, Prog, Folk and Free Form Jazz. With this, their ninth effort, Opeth continue to shake things up, turn the corner and push the limits of their sound. And the results are breathtaking. Ultimately, Watershed sounds at once completely like and absolutely nothing like previous Opeth records. Watershed takes all that is Opeth, and goes where Opeth have never gone before.

Summary: Progression and Growth at its finest
Opeth is a unique band when it comes to writing. On Watershed, they have shown that yet again. They truly made an amazing record. Not only is it the usual progressive death metal Opeth is famous for but, you can clearly hear influence of all genres throughout the album. Amazing record.

Summary: Fantastic fusion of beauty and chaos
Yet another fantastic album from Opeth. It's a great fusion of chaos and calm beauty. The transitions between the 2 are really well arranged. In all fairness, this is not an album for those seeking instant gratification. It takes time to truly 'hear' everything that has been compiled into this collection. It took me good 6 full spins to really get all that this album offers. As usual, some tracks pulled me in instantly, #2 probably being the instant favorite. As I listened more and more, I started to like other tracks. Initially, I was not thrilled with this album but after taking the time to really listen to it, it delivers. I also happened to see Opeth live recently which may have helped me enjoy this album more.

As my last statement, I found that albums that really remained in my regular listening rotation are the ones that took time to grow on me. If I love the album right away after 1st listen, that's actually a bad sign. It means I will be bored with it in couple of weeks. It's very odd but it's true. For those of you that walked away disappointed after a couple spins, go back and listen to the entire album again several more times. It'll come to you.

   Summary: Opeth Continues To Grow
I haven't heard all of Opeth's albums. The ones I have are Damnation, Deliverance, Ghost Reveries, Blackwater Park, and now Watershed, and Watersehd is by far my favorite. It is more progressive than any I have heard, which is for me a good thing. I plan on getting the rest of Opeth's library, but do not expect any album to surpass this masterpiece. I hope one does, because it will be one hell of an album.

   Summary: Freakin Opeth man!!
I'm getting a little tired of this band making me spend hard earned doe on every piece of material they put out. Its getting very old. I have no choice I guess. Unbelievable band.

Now... before you just assume this CD is not up to snuff - I think this is definately one of (if not) their best. Incredible in every sense of the word. A true treasure of an album. I'm blown completely away.

   Summary: Opeth does it again.
Before going directly into the review of Watershed, listening to anything decent today in the rock or metal category is hard to find. In a wash of nu-metal and over-saturated rock songs that all sound the same, it is hard to find material that still seems fresh and new. That being said, this is where bands such as Opeth and Porcupine tree stand out above the rest. Opeth, with this album, brings another fresh breath of air and reminds me why I come to appreciate their music so much in the first place.

Watershed, along with Ghost reveries represents a more focused direction in terms of a typical Opeth album in my opinion. Whereas older Opeth CDs tended to take a sort of random approach from one track to the next, this CD is much more fluid. For example, at the end of one song, such as "Coil" you know you are going into a heavy track. That being said, "Coil" and "Burden" represent the relaxed, Damnation side of Opeth. They are both great songs, although "Burden" took a few plays to get me hooked. "Porcelain Heart" is one of my favorite songs on the disc. This may confuse people since it could be considered strictly "rock" with maybe a twinge of metal. But that's just it folks: Opeth might produce a "rock" track, but they do it AMAZINGLY well. Getting into the traditional tracks such as "Hessian Peel" (starts with one of the best melodies ever), "Lotus Eater", and "Hex Omega" are you typical Opeth tracks with their roller-coaster ride of progressive metal. Think along the lines of Ghost Reveries for these tracks. That leaves "Heir Apparent", a bone-crushingly heavy track--one of the heaviest from Opeth to date. This track reminded me of Morbid for some reason. Again, Opeth shows us that even at their heaviest they still shine.

If you are a fan of Opeth, you should buy this album regardless of the reviews because, in honesty, there is something for even the nit-pickiest of Opeth fans out there. For me, Opeth tops my list of music because no matter what style they play, and they do it right. They continue to do great things on this CD.

In closing, if you like Opeth, stop reading the review and buy the CD. Take it home, listen to it, and thank the heavens that there are bands like Opeth that don't need to follow the horde of boring, beat-to-death sound that blares through the radio today.
