Summary: This was worth my time and money. I have used this product for over a year and a half. I would not recommend it for a beginner. It took some trial and error, a couple software patches, and a few wasted blank DVDs, but it has been well worth my $80.00. Once you get your recording routine down, it works quite well. Summary: Video Capture Fine/Customer Service Questionable I recently purchased this item and for the price and my needs, the video capture device works just fine (transferring old home movies to DVD with the hopes of editing them). However, the editing program bundled with this software (MovieFactory 3.0) is terrible and, in short, doesn't work, nor does their customer service department (you can't even register your product, which you must do in order to obtain customer service). Frankly, I'm not convinced after numerous requests that the company even exists. I therefore purchased a separte program called PowerDirector for editing purposes, and so far, this program seems to have very few bugs and is quite a lot of fun. Summary: Video cap works great but bundled software is terrible I've been using DVD Express for about 6 months, and I'm very happy with it. I've used it to convert VHS and home DVD from a DVD camcorder. It's dead simple to use and has worked perfectly. The bundled software from ULead, Moviemaker 3.0 SE, on the other hand is horrible. I spent a lot of time trying to get it to work, but every single time I tell it to write a DVD or disk image it crashes. Every single time. ADS should know better than to bundle such terrible software with an otherwise great product. Summary: Works Well I was surprised to see some of the negative reviews. I have been using this product for a year or so quite successfully. I suspect the negative reviewers are either running it on underpowered machines or have junk or viruses running. This product does a good job. Summary: Mediocre Product I've been using ADS Tech's DVD Xpress for about six months. Here is my assessment based on many hours using the product. You can convert your analog video to digital format on your computer. The final video file, however, is flawed. Every minute or so, the picture freezes. The freeze is brief, probably less than a second, but it is noticeable. In addition, in scenes where there is a lot of action, the picture breaks up into little squares. If you are converting a movie, and there is a scene where there are people sitting at a table carrying on a conversation, the picture is unlikely to break up (although you will still get those brief pauses). But if people are running around, or there are fast moving cars, the moving object will morph into a bunch of little blocks, and then morph back. What you get is a video file frequently punctuated with pauses and picture break-ups. The audio is unaffected. Bundled with the hardware is Ulead DVD MovieFactory. If it worked properly, it would be a great video editing package, considering that you do not have to buy it separately. There is better software out there, but it would have been a great value as bundled software if it worked. Unfortunately, it doesn't work right, at least not all the time. I have a satellite dish, and if I record a program directly from the television to the computer, the software will work as advertised (although the video will have the flaws described in the last paragraph; but that is a fault of the hardware, not the software). If I convert a VHS tape into a digital video file, you can't edit it and burn a DVD with MovieFactory. The software will either crash or become unresponsive when I try to open the file for editing. I have to press CTRL+ALT+Delete to shut down the software, and I usually have to re-boot my computer as well. In order to work with my VHS tape collection, I had to buy another video editing software package, which was a nightmare in itself. Nero did not work at all, and Roxio Easy Media Creator is adequate once you figure it out, but slow and cumbersome (but at least it works). After six months, I have decided to give up on DVD Xpress. Although there is no degradation of the picture quality, the resulting pauses and picture break-ups result in videos that are of worse quality that the source VHS tapes. For me, ADS Tech's DVD Xpress is not a satisfactory solution to the analog-to-digital video conversion challenge. |
