Written on June 27, 2005 Summary: Worth every penny I love this grill just last night i made pizza on it for the first time it's got a awesome amount of cooking space for such a portable grill. it's great we use it on our patio all the time. the build quality is great and it's very easy to clean i think they even added some vents into the design so the airflow is awesome... and with amazons free shipping you cant find a better deal anywhere. The lid lock is a godsend and the side benefit is that due to the construction of the piece, smokey joe is an apt name. the carry handle is awesome. The side vents direct air such that I almost always have beautiful smoke filling my little grill and infusing my meal with fabulous flavor. I've had mine for over a decade and while I've gone through another big Weber kettle and now a huge smoker, this little number is still in the race and I have NO intentions of giving it up. I'm taking it camping with me next weekend. It's a no-brainer. Buy it and be happy. Written on July 22, 2004 Summary: in betweener This grill sits right in between the classic smoky joe gold (14.5" grill or thereabouts), and the Weber One-Touch line (18.5 and 22.5"). It also happens to be not found in stores (in my area, Portland OR), probably for that reason: people who are looking for a bigger grill would go for the stand up one touch, and those looking for portability would go for the smoky joe gold. This grill is perfect for those who want enough capacity for good indirect heating, but more mobility than a one touch. This grill handles a whole chicken, a rack of ribs, maybe a good sized salmon filet. Not at once, of course. You could do a fair amount of smoking in it too. I like that it's lower down as well, so you can kick back and have a cold one as you tend to the food. Some concerns: 1)It isn't super heavy, but it's nowhere near as light as the smoky joe gold. It's better for car camping for sure, or a day at the beach 2) It doesn't come with the hinged grill that allows you to add more coals without removing the whole grate. While you can buy the replacement, why doesn't it come standard? These minor points aside, this is a very happy medium between portability and capacity. |
