 Written on July 25, 2000 Summary: The worst As much as I respect the Penns, Travolta, and the other actors involved, I must go along with the minority voices on this one. I just saw it on a bus ride to NYC and thought it was worse than the nasal surgery I just had three weeks ago. I missed the opening credits, so only found out at the end that it was Robin Wright Penn--much to my dismay, as I've enjoyed her work elsewhere. The worst parts of John (and apparently Nick) Cassavetes--meandering script, unlikeable characters, tedium, tedium, tedium. Root canal might be more meaningful.  Written on July 20, 2000 Summary: Penn,Wright & Travolta meet the Cassavetes. It took me a couple of viewings before I realised what a good film this is. It's satisfying in so many ways. The theme is love of course, but don't let that put you off. It's the kind of intense soul-mate love, Cassevetes' style. Nick Cassevetes does a nice job & very stylish too. The great thing about this movie is the performances. Sean Penn is outstanding,as usual,& Robin Wright pulls off her best performance as Sean's wife~(deja vu). Travolta is Travolta, which is fine by me & a comfortable role for him for a change.  Written on June 30, 2000 Summary: In defence of She's So Lovely What is it about a down and out romance like 'She's So Lovely' that seems to polarise an audience into those who see it as a trashy, confusing and unrealistic ride, and those of us that find it endearing, amusing and utterly, utterly charming. Perhaps we find a grain of truth within She's So Lovely that identifies with our own lives. Husband + wife team Sean + Robin Wright Penn deliver sterling performances and an unmistakable on-screen chemistry as they come to terms with their roller coaster relationship, and their sense of belonging in a changing society. Nobody plays the down on his luck,loveable loser quite like Penn, and Robin Wright Penn is a revelation as his ideal companion. This is the perfect antidote to all the high budget - low chemistry romance/dramas on the racks, combining superb acting and great dialogue, with an engrossing and uplifting story. Written on March 7, 2000 Summary: She's So Rotten......... Absolutely one of the all time worst movies I have ever seen (second only to Independence Day). If you are just absolutely forced to watch this movie, then I highly suggest not eating 1-2 hours before show time. After watching it, I actually felt embarrased for all those involved in its creation (honestly). I started thinking, "This can't be for real.......the film editor must have had a 'beef' with the director and he deliberately pieced the film together in the wrong order so to get back at him......Yeah, that's gotta be it." You never know at anytime during the movie just what the heck is going on (it's all over the place). I literally had to read the reviews to figure out what it was that I had just painfully sat through. Belive me when I say, "Save your money and save your time. 'She's So Lovely' is 'So Rotten'." Written on October 29, 1999 Summary: Cassavetes lives through "Lovely" The viewer from Island Heights, New Jersey is way off the mark. Rent up all of the old John Cassavetes-directed films (e.g - A Woman Under the Influence, Opening Night, Love Streams, etc.) and take in all of who was the king of independent movies, the messiah of slick-guerilla (oxymoron) filmmaking - John Cassavetes. You've probably seen him in The Dirty Dozen or Rosemary's Baby - but he is widely acknowledged as one of the most influential and genuinely talented filmmakers of his time. Soak him in and then watch "She's So Lovely" again - and you've entered a whole new world. Sean Penn delivers an outstanding performance, as does Robin Wright Penn. John Travolta is doing what he does, which is play hyperbolic, schizophrenic versions of his "Pulp Fiction" character. But this movie, directed by Cassavetes' son from a script written before Cassavetes died, is outstanding. It's a good jumping-on point for John Cassavetes, but a great "end of the line" too. |
