Professional Review:
Robert Cray says that Buddy Guy's guitar solos sound like laughter from space, but they can also peal like the cries of lost souls attempting to cross the River Styx. If these 47 songs on three CDs plus a DVD boasting a new 75-minute documentary and six performances from the Montreux Jazz Festival prove anything, it's that Guy is one of the most dynamic, diverse, expressionistic, and emotional guitarists--in any genre. The set neatly examines the 70-year-old Chicago blues legend's half-century career, starting with a ragged but soulful "The Way You Been Treating Me" cut in 1957 at a radio station in Guy's native Louisiana that finds him developing his searing, exploratory style. A year later, he's in Chicago working with tunesmith Willie Dixon, and the rest is history (chronicled in Anthony DeCurtis's excellent lines notes) that leads from the glory days of Chess Records to Guy's early breakout recordings for Vanguard to his modern-day mastery. The most recent recordings often find him working with acolytes: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Keb' Mo', Jonny Lang, Bonnie Raitt, Keith Richards, and John Mayer (who duets with Guy on the unreleased "I'd Rather Be Blind, Crippled & Crazy"). B.B. King, who along with Guitar Slim was Guy's most important early influence, also joins Clapton and Guy on a stirring acoustic version of John Lee Hooker's "Crawlin' Kingsnake."

This set makes the argument for Guy's ever-continuing growth as a musician--not only as a player whose frenzy, improvisational instincts, and tonal control keep stretching with age, but as a stylist who was unafraid to put aside his trademark electric approach in 2003 to make the acoustic Blues Singer (represented here by "Bad Life Blues" and the Hooker tune) and to embrace primal North Mississippi juke joint music with Sweet Tea, which lends this set a pair of Junior Kimbrough covers. Guy's sole artistic weakness is his songwriting. He's never been prolific, and even in the '60s his lyrics drew on well-established clichés. But, as these performances attest, his playing's never been less than daring--and his voice knows every nuance of heartache and joy. --Ted Drozdowski

Summary: This is the BEST "ALBUM" I have ever listened to.
I'm 42 at this writing, and I have pretty eclectic tastes. But I have a special place in my heart for guitarists who can pull emotion out of their instruments the way Buddy Guy can.

I heard a few of his MP3s a few years ago, and thought, "This guy is pretty good." Last weekend I was organizing my collection and I rediscovered them, and decided I should buy all his albums. I started with this collection.

This guy's work is indescribably good. The untitled instrumental on the first CD is reminiscent of sitting on the front porch in Louisiana watching a few hens scratch and bicker with a rooster. Then the angry riffs on "I Smell A Rat" evoke a yellowjacket swarm, as Buddy bemoans his woman's faithlessness and finishes with self-blame because she's just "so good to me."

Then "Feels Like Rain," a song that sounds like you should have heard it on the radio a long time ago but didn't, contains mellow lyrics and riffs that make you feel like you smoked reefer first when you didn't. Buddy Guy will just make you feel GOOD.

Styles in this collection are all over the map, and it took me four days to get through it because I had to play almost every song over and over before going on to the next. Buddy's riffs are all over the map, too. His one-take recordings from the 50's have that improvisational feel, but they're perfect that way. You get the feeling that you're sitting in a room with him, watching him play. These are the kind of songs that, if you tried to improve on them, you'd ruin them.

Buddy Guy loves to play and sing the blues. I know that because I can hear it in his performances. He pulls emotions--anger, humor, and ironic sadness, sometimes simultaneously, from his guitar and through his vocals.

This set (three CDs, one DVD) is packaged so that it looks like an expensive book (when you open it, there are actually several pages of commentary). It would make a good gift for others. But mainly, it makes a good gift for yourself. I can't stress this enough--until you have this collection, your life is missing something truly special.

Summary: buddy guy-can't quit the blues cd/dvd
I am more of a blues purest and prefer the older traditional material.Of the three cd's.It goes from the earlier material to the later music. The first one is fantastic the second is great and the third ok.The dvd is put together very well with some quality music clips and very interesting documentary.Since great blues musicians have very little out there on dvd's it is absolutely a must have.

   Summary: Excellent Place to Start
This is a great overview of Buddy Guy's career. It is worth the purchase just for the DVD footage. The performances and the documentary are just the ticket. The three audio discs lean to his more recent career releases, from "Damn Right I Got the Blues" and forward. However, there are treasures to be found before then, which are sampled on the first disc. Overall, an excellent place to start for the novice, and worth owning for the DVD for the long time fan.

   Summary: Can't quit listening !!!
This set is aptly titled. At 70+ years old, he's still going strong - as the cuts from his latest studio album (Bring Em' In) confirm. This is a good introduction for the casual fan, and a must have for the hardcore - due to the cuts that were included here but were left off other studio albums. Now for the less than 5 star rating explaination - 3 audio dics are not enough !!!!! The DVD was nice, but I would have liked to see another audio disc. There were a LOT of good cuts not included because of the 3 disc limit. Buddy guy is one of, if not the BEST, bluesman still alive. This set is worth the cost of admission !!!!!
